Troubleshooting & FAQ

Common questions and solutions for the most frequent issues.

Audio Issues

No sound is playing

Check these first:

1. Make sure the volume is up on your device and not muted (check the physical mute switch on iPhone)

2. Check that the crossfader isn't all the way to the opposite deck

3. Verify the channel volume fader is up for the deck you're playing

4. If using headphones: check that CUE is enabled for the deck you want to hear

5. If using external audio: make sure your audio interface is properly connected and selected

Audio is crackling or stuttering

Audio glitches usually indicate the device is under heavy load. Try these solutions:

1. Close background apps: Double-tap Home (or swipe up and hold) and close other apps

2. Disable Stem Separation: AI stem processing is CPU-intensive. If you're not using stems, disable them

3. Reduce effects: Multiple Audio Unit effects running simultaneously can strain older devices

4. Use 2-deck mode: 4-deck mode with the Orbital Fader requires more processing power

5. Check temperature: If your device is hot, it may be throttling CPU performance. Let it cool down

One deck is louder than the other

Check the following controls:

1. Trim/Gain knobs: These set the input level for each deck independently

2. Channel faders: Make sure both are at the same position

3. Track loudness: Different tracks are mastered at different levels. Use the trim knobs to balance them

Audio plays through the wrong output

Go to Settings > Audio Output and verify your routing:

1. Main Output: Where the audience/master mix plays

2. Headphone Output: Where CUE preview plays

If using a split cable or DJ interface, ensure the correct channels are assigned to each output.

Controller Issues

Controller not recognized

USB Connection:

1. Ensure you're using an Apple-certified Lightning to USB or USB-C adapter

2. Try a different USB cable — some cables are charge-only and don't carry data

3. Power cycle the controller (turn it off and on)

4. Restart Tremor

Bluetooth Connection:

1. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in iOS Settings

2. Put the controller in pairing mode (see controller manual)

3. In Tremor, tap the antenna icon and select "Add Bluetooth Device"

4. If it was previously paired, try forgetting the device in iOS Bluetooth settings and re-pairing

Jog wheel feels laggy or unresponsive

Bluetooth users: Bluetooth MIDI has inherent latency. For the most responsive jog wheel performance, use USB connection.

USB users: Try a powered USB hub if your controller requires more power than the iOS device provides.

All users: Check that you're in Vinyl mode (jog wheel controls scratch) vs. CD mode (jog wheel controls pitch bend).

Some buttons or knobs don't work

Tremor includes built-in mappings for supported controllers, but not every button may be mapped:

1. Check if the control requires SHIFT to be held

2. Some controllers have mode buttons that change what the pads do — make sure you're in the expected mode

3. Use MIDI Learn to create a custom mapping for unmapped controls. Go to MIDI Settings > Mapping > Learn

Library & Tracks

Apple Music tracks won't load

Apple Music (streaming) tracks use DRM protection and cannot be loaded in DJ apps. This is a limitation set by Apple and applies to all DJ software.

Workarounds:

1. Purchased tracks: Songs you've purchased from iTunes (not Apple Music subscription) should work

2. Import your own files: Use Files app to add MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, or AIFF files to Tremor

3. SoundCloud Go+: Connect your SoundCloud Go+ account for streaming access

Track BPM shows "---" and never detects

BPM detection runs in the background after loading a track. If it stays at "---":

1. Very short tracks: Tracks under 30 seconds may not have enough content for accurate detection

2. Non-musical audio: Spoken word, ambient sounds, or very sparse arrangements may not have detectable tempo

3. Variable tempo: Live recordings with tempo drift are harder to analyze

4. Try reloading: Eject the track and load it again to restart analysis

Track loads slowly

First-time track loads require waveform analysis and take longer. Subsequent loads are nearly instant because analysis is cached.

Tips for faster loading:

1. Pre-analyze your library: Load tracks once before your set so they're cached

2. Use local files: Tracks stored on-device load faster than streamed tracks

3. Close other apps: Free up memory and CPU for Tremor

Can I use tracks from Spotify?

No. Spotify does not allow third-party apps to access audio streams. This applies to all DJ software, not just Tremor.

Alternatives:

1. SoundCloud Go+ integration (available in Tremor)

2. Purchase and download tracks from Beatport, iTunes, Bandcamp, etc.

3. Import your own audio files

Sync & Beat Matching

Sync button doesn't work

Sync requires BPM detection to complete on both tracks:

1. Wait for BPM to appear (not "---") on both decks

2. Make sure both tracks are loaded and not at the very beginning or end

3. Check that you have a track playing on the leader deck

Tracks drift out of sync over time

This can happen with tracks that have slight tempo variations:

1. Use Quantize: Enable quantize mode for automatic corrections

2. Manual nudge: Use the jog wheel edges to nudge tracks back into alignment

3. Check BPM accuracy: If BPM detection is off by a decimal (120.1 vs 120.0), tracks will drift

4. Live recordings: Tracks recorded live (not to a click track) naturally have tempo variations

Beats are off by half a bar

The automatic beat detection finds beats but may not identify the correct downbeat (beat 1 of the bar).

Fix: Go to the SYNC page and tap the TAP button exactly on beat 1 of the track. This shifts the beat grid to align properly.

AI Stems

Stem separation is slow

AI stem separation is computationally intensive. Processing time depends on:

1. Device: Newer devices with Neural Engine (A14+) are significantly faster

2. Track length: Longer tracks take more time

3. Background load: Close other apps to maximize available processing power

Stems are cached after first separation, so loading the same track again is instant.

Stem quality isn't perfect

AI stem separation is impressive but not perfect. Results vary based on:

1. Track complexity: Dense mixes with overlapping frequencies are harder to separate

2. Audio quality: Higher quality source files produce better stems

3. Instrumentation: Standard arrangements (drums/bass/vocals/other) separate best

For critical applications, consider using professional pre-separated stems.

General Questions

Does Tremor work offline?

Yes! Once tracks are loaded on your device, Tremor works fully offline. The only features requiring internet are:

1. Streaming from SoundCloud

2. Shazam song identification

3. Uploading recordings to SoundCloud

4. Fetching lyrics

Can I use Tremor at a professional gig?

Absolutely. Tremor is designed for professional use. Tips for live performance:

1. Use airplane mode: Prevents notifications and calls from interrupting

2. Connect power: Keep your device charged throughout the set

3. Use USB controller: Lower latency than Bluetooth

4. Pre-analyze tracks: Load all tracks once before the gig so BPM and waveforms are cached

5. Bring a backup: Always have a backup source (USB drive, laptop) just in case

How do I update Tremor?

Tremor updates through the App Store like any iOS app:

1. Open the App Store

2. Tap your profile picture

3. Scroll down to see available updates

4. Tap "Update" next to Tremor

Enable automatic updates in iOS Settings to always have the latest version.
